DCA was incorporated by three individials with a history of contributions to the atheist community and synergistic skills.
Christopher Arntzen, Vice President
Christopher Arntzen has been an active member of the freethought community in Washington, DC for the last two decades.
He also served for several years as the chair of the national organization, Gay and Lesbian Atheists and Humanists, and was a featured speaker for that organization at the Godless Americans March on Washington. He has recently formed Gay Atheists of Washington DC.
John Beers, Secretary/Treasurer
John Beers founded SKEPTIC: Science & Knowledge Empowering People to Intelligently Choose. SKEPTIC (now known as Secular Student Alliance at GW) is a student organization at The George Washington University. John served as President of the group for two years and lobbied to remove prayers from the University's commencement exercises. He served on an interfaith panel for a discussion about interfaith relationships and later became the first atheist representative of the GW's interfaith organization.
John has been an active member of of the local atheist community since 2007 and enjoys studing the Abrahamic religions and training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu/mixed martial arts.
Shelley Mountjoy, President
In 2006, Shelley founded an affilate of the Rational Response Squad at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. The group, now known as the Secular Student Alliance (GMU), is an activist group intended to stimulate freethinking received university recognition in May of 2007. Shelley is currently the President.
Shelley serves as Vice President of Virginia Freethought Renaissance (VFR). VFR seeks to educate the public on matters related to a non-theist life stance, advocate for the Constitutional principle of separation of church and state, and is a statewide communication effort to promote events of various associate member organizations.
Since July of 2008, Shelley has organized over 200 secular social, educational, and community service events throughout Central Virginia and the DC Metro Area. She is currently among the leadership of Drinking Skeptically-Richmond, Washington Area Secular Humanists-Northern Virginia Chapter, and Gay Atheists of Washington DC. She is also on the advisory board of Atheist Nexus, the world's largest social networking site for non-theists.
In May of 2009, Shelley was elected to the Board of Directors of the Secular Student Alliance. Shelley has written several articles for their newsletter, the eMpirical.
